Tall Ships to Visit Shores & Islands Ports Labor Day Weekend
August 22, 2016
Five majestic tall ships will make port in the Shores & Islands region this Labor Day weekend and will be available for tours and sailing excursions.
Downtown Sandusky plays host to the Sandusky Festival of Sail, an event showcasing visits from four historic sailing vessels, September 3-5. It has been more than a decade since Sandusky has hosted a tall ships festival and event organizers are hopeful that this is only a preview of a larger festival to honor Sandusky's Bicentennial in 2018. The full-scale festival will also include live music, food, and vendors in addition to day sails and on-board tours with the majestic boats.
Ships that will visit Sandusky are El Galeon Andalucia – a 16th Century Spanish replica, U.S. Brig Niagara – famous locally as the flagship of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry during the Battle of Lake Erie fought just off of Put-in-Bay during the War of 1812, When and If – General George S. Patton's personal schooner, and Mist of Avalon – a Canadian 19th century Grand Banks schooner.
Tickets for the Sandusky Festival of Sail are $20 and include on-board tours of El Galeon Andalucia, U.S. Brig Niagara, and Mist of Avalon. Fast Passes, which provide front-of-the-line access when touring the ships, are available for $59. When and If will be providing 90-minute day sails each day at 10 am, Noon, 2 pm, and 4 pm. Day sails are $65 per person and include festival admission and other ship tours. Tickets are available now and visitors are encouraged to pre-purchase to guarantee a ticket, especially for the day sails which are likely to sell-out. Tickets can be purchased at SanduskyFestivalofSail.com.
Kelleys Island will play host to the tall ship Appledore IV, which will be docked at Portside Marina from September 1-5. Appledore IV will offer 90-minute sailing cruises on Friday – Monday, with each sail holding up to 40 passengers. Sailing tickets are $60 each, or two for $100. Sails will take place Friday at 6 pm and 8:30 pm. Saturday and Sunday sails are offered at 9:30 am, 12 pm, 6 pm, and 8:30 pm. On Monday there are two sails offered; 9 am and 3:30 pm. On board tours are available for $5 when the ship is not sailing. Purchase tickets for the sailing excursions at kelleysislandchamber.com.
The Sandusky Festival of Sail is presented by Draw Events and Green Door Mediaworks. The Appledore IV visit is presented by the Kelleys Island Chamber of Commerce.
